FROSTED COVERED DANGERS.

The health dangers of the cereals we eat every day are many. They are especially harmful to children, who are the biggest consumers. Cereals are far from nutritious and certainly don’t contain the important micronutrients needed for good health and growth. Of course, cereal manufacturers claim otherwise.

Children are getting a very unhealthy sugar-loaded and high-carbohydrate meal to start their day. This is the main reason why we have a huge childhood obesity problem. It also contributes to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, hyperactivity, high blood pressure, elevated levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides, and even cancer.

Inexpensive and easy-to make vitamins are put into the cereals. They are not health-promoting but often toxic because they are mainly synthetic. The corn used is primarily, if not completely, derived from genetically-modified organisms (GMO). So is the sugar which is derived from corn in the very detrimental form of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). 

Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a preservative added to cereals. It is generally accepted as safe if taken in small doses but becomes concerning when you consider its cumulative effect or its effect on the smaller bodies of children. Short-term ingestion can cause allergic reactions like asthma as well as inflammation. Long-term use has a damaging effect on the respiratory and endocrine systems as well as the liver, thyroid and kidneys. It also increases the risk of cancer, especially to the lungs and liver.

Unhealthy partially-hydrogenated trans-fat oils are also used in cereals.

Another questionable practice is that of adding excessive sugar and salt to the cereal of children, while having less protein and half the amount of fibre. Are they doing this in order to create "cereal addicts" who will crave these foods from an early age into adulthood?

A while back, a cereal producer got away with placing an outlandish slogan on one of their cereal boxes.

It claimed that their sugar loaded cereal can help support a child’s immune system. This claim has since been removed due to public outcry.

One of the main producers of these unhealthy foods has unfortunately been promoted through the "Share Your Breakfast"  marketing campaign with the Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK). The pretext is that of stopping childhood hunger and help children have a nutritious start to the school day. Furthermore, The American Heart Association (AHA) provides an endorsement for their products.

Cereal producers pour a massive amount of money into their advertising that targets especially children. Kids are subjected to hundreds of cereal TV commercials each year, as well as print ads plastered with colourful cartoons to make children want these “happy” foods.

THE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE.

Throw away all cereals, and opt instead for something natural and nutritious like a hearty bowl of oatmeal. It is not only healthy, but just as convenient because it takes hardly any extra time to prepare.
